The Del Mar Junior Lifeguard Program Instructors:

RUSS

Senior Instructor, over 20 years lifeguarding and Junior Lifeguard Instructor Experience. Instructs oldest B group. Most Junior Guard Alumni Insructors have been a JG in Russ’ group at least once!Special Instructor Achievement award 2001. Works year round as a lifeguard in Solana Beach.

PABLO:

Senior Instructor, 16 years lifeguarding experience, Junior Lifeguard Alumni, DMJG Photographer (owner of Martini Productions)DMJG Instructor of the year 2006. Currently teaching at Mira Costa College. Instructs “A,B, C and D” groups.

SAM:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Been a part of JG’s since he was 10 years old! Holds several NSSA, college, and lifeguard surfing contest titles. Lead Instructor for competitions. Lives in Costa Rica part of the year. Instructs “B and C” groups.

TOMAS:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Junior Lifeguard of the year for the state of California as an “A” Junior Guard. Been a part of JG’s since he was 10 yrs old! Most outstanding JG as a “C”, “B” and “A” .Works year round as a lifeguard in Del Mar.

ZACH:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni- Been a part of JG’s since he was 9 years old! Instructs “C” group. Lead Instructor for Regionals and Nationals. Has won too many surf contests to be named here! Instructor of the year 2007. Attending Masters Program at UCLA.

BRETT:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Most Outstanding Junior Lifeguard as an “A”- Been part of JG’s since he was 10 years old! Born and raised in Solana Beach. Year round lifeguard for Solana Beach. Instructs the “B” group.

BEAR:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Waterman Award as an “A”- Been part of JG’s since he was 10 years old. Avid fisherman, free diver. Finishing up college at Cal State San Marcos. Instructs “B and C” groups.

ALEX:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Been a part of JG’s since he was 10 years old. Rookie of the year for Del Mar Lifeguards 2002. Music lover, Rapper, soccer coach. Founder of ISH. Instructs “B and C” groups.

ELENA:

9 years lifeguarding experience. Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Been a part of JG’s since she was 12 years old. Most Outstanding JG as an “A”. Works year round as a lifeguard in Encinitas. Instructs the “A” groups.

CATHERINE:

8 years life-guarding experience, completed her first summer as an Instructor with us, put in some year round guarding with Cal State Parks. Played water polo for UCSD. Is currently getting ready to begin Graduate School.

JAKE:

9 years Lifeguarding experience, Just finished 3rd year of JG Instructing. Incredible waterman and athlete. Baseball coach and substitute teacher during the school year. Instructs the “B” group. Great addition to the Instructor Team.

KATHRYN:

REID:

Junior Lifeguard Alumni, Been a part of JG’s since he was 9 years old. Most Outstanding JG as a “C” and “B”. Avid Surfer. Currently attending college on the Gold Coast of Austrailia. Instructs the “B” group.

CRAIG:

Over 20 years lifeguarding and Junior Lifeguarding experience. Grew up in Solana Beach. Hired Turtle back in the day and was Turtle’s supervisor at one time. Insane waterman, Math teacher at Torrey Pines High School. Too many awards to be named here! Little Turtle Instructor. Everyone loves Craig!!!!

GUS:

Over 20 years lifeguarding experience. Del Mar Local! Avid Surfer. Kindergarten teacher. Father of 3 and all around mellow guy. Little Turtle Instructor We LOVE Gus!!!!

Every Del Mar Junior Lifeguard instructor meets the following criteria:

Is a certified and experienced ocean Lifeguard
Holds a current First Responder First Aid certificate
Holds a current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate
Passes a 500-yard ocean swim test in under 10 minutes each year
In addition to meeting these requirements, all instructors have passed a fingerprint screening. All of our instructors have lifeguarding experience (several have more than 10 years of experience). Most Instructors also possess specialized training and certification in the following areas: Cliff Rescue, Swift Water Training, IRB or PWC operator, Code 3 driving, and EMT. Many of our Instructors are Junior Lifeguard Alumni. Collectively, the DMJG instructor staff has countless years of lifeguarding and junior lifeguard experience. And as an instructor team, everyone works exceptionally well together.
